Welcome to Scalp MicroPigmentation Australia, where we offer the most comprehensive and structured SMP training program in Australia under instruction by our 2 lead trainers, Caitlin James and Emma Burnett.
Part 1. At Home Online Theory
(Learn the fundamental theory of SMP before you commence treatments. 2 weeks self paced) We have a very strong theory component to our training course so we can help everyone become a knowledgeable and skilled SMP artist. Online learning begins as soon as you sign up, you get instant access! At a minimum, online begins 4 weeks prior to your practical course dates so you can work through the theory component at your own pace.
Part 2. At Home Machine/Melon Practice
(Start your dot pattern exercises with your machine. 2 weeks self paced)
Part 3. In Clinic (Adelaide) Hands on Model Practical
(learn how to perform SMP Treatments on real life models under supervision. 4 days practical in clinic)
Pre-Requisite
There is a pre-requisite for training – you need to hold a certification in Infection Control (HLTINF005) to work on live models on day two, three & four. Ideally you must have relevant industry experience in cosmetic or body art tattooing, health, medical or beauty.

Already have a suitable SMP Machine? Talk to us first before upgrading to the Bishop SMP Pen. If not, we can discount your kit cost.
Class Sizes | Students : Teacher Ratio
We offer small, boutique style classes for beginners and additional online advanced modules for extended learning. We have mentoring sessions that can be booked in easily upon request if you need further help after training. Each class is limited to just 4 students. Due to this, quite often there may be a wait list to train with us but we offer regular training throughout the year. We have a 2 student to 1 trainer ratio and are never left unsupervised during tattooing.
Caitlin was invited onto the SKILLS IQ board for creating the framework of the Nationally Recognised Qualification for Scalp MicroPigmentation. As a Trainer and Assessor, she holds the certification that has enabled her to design our training program to the highest standard here in Australia. We are not an RTO but can help you obtain your national certificate.
Ongoing Support & Advanced Learning
Scalp Micropigmentation Australia offers ongoing support with our team to help you once you start treating in your own business. Our students love the online support through our training network which has access to other experienced Scalp MicroPigmentation practitioners. We offer extended learning opportunities through our master classes and advanced training online modules.

Day 1 – Establishing a Strong Foundation for SMP Success with Scalp MicroPigmentation Australia Training Academy
Our trainers recap the essential knowledge from the online learning and focus on teaching you with the skills required for conducting successful consultations and delivering accurate quotes. Our training dives straight into practical application, giving you hands-on experience with machine practice. You will learn the art of hairline tattooing, master density effects, and perfect the blending techniques that contribute to seamless and natural-looking SMP results. Learn the SMP Australia process of creating realistic and textured effects. Pigment Mixing made easy – no modifiers needed for correction, Choosing the right tones for your clients.
Day 2 – Practical Application and explanations of treating long-hair density for both men and women (2 Models to Work On) The Importance of Pre and Post Care.
Day 3 – Practical Application and explanations of Shaven SMP. We teach hairline design, shaving techniques, blending perfection and maintenance sessions (2 Models to Work On) Business Building, The Right Hair Length for SMP, Needles, Pigments and Machines.

The Training Team
Caitlin is an international award-winning SMP artist with nine years of experience solely in SMP with 10 years previous experience working under Dr. Mario Marzola as a Hair Transplant Assistant. Caitlin Specialises in advanced techniques such as alopecia, scar camouflage and facial hair micropigmentation.
Emma has achieved multiple awards for her results and has a dermatology nursing background of over 10 years. Emma specialises in shaven effect, natural hairlines and hair transplant blending.
Sam is a dental nurse and clinical manager prior to being an amazing SMP artist specialising in hair transplant, woman’s density treatments and shaven effects.
Daniel manages all training enquires, training bookings and can help you with any questions about our training options.
Where to Stay for your SMP Training in Adelaide?
Are you travelling in from interstate for your 4 days hands on practical training? We are conveniently located next to The Walkers Arms Hotel and have Yolk Café below our clinic!
We suggest arriving the day prior to training to ensue a good-nights rest the ahead of information loaded 4 days of practical SMP training. When it’s time to go, either flying out after 5:30pm or the next day is recommended, we have room to store your luggage on the last day if needed.
SMP Australia Training Academy is located at Level 1, 40 North East Road, Walkerville. This is around 20 minutes from the Airport and in a beautiful suburb of Adelaide close to a walking track and 5 minutes drive from the city centre.
We are located next to a hotel for the convenience of our interstate guests with surrounding shops and take-away. The hotel has room service and a relaxing beer garden.
For breakfast and lunch we recommend Yolk Café below SMP Australia, with a modern menu and amazing coffee open from 6:30am.
